On top of that, it seems the only character who can actually influence his personality is the "Dragonborn", so he doesn't benefit from a lack of morals (like the MC from Overlord) from the setting written for the "Demon Lord" persona, at least until this chapter when his cursed ring starts to shine. To contrast this you can look at Overlord, where the MC encourages the NPCs to think for themselves because they otherwise pretty much just stand by until he gives them orders. In that regard the NPCs here show a great degree of individualism, acting on their own interests. It would seem most of them don't mind the change or even welcome it. This is so out of character that the NPCs have no grounds to stand on to try and rationalize his actions as a long term machiavellic scheme.
It's hard NOT to notice when your boss is supposed to be an evil bastard that would (in lore) routinely massacre people from his fortress of doom, and instead he decides to start a spa venture in a random village with a saint.
